During lockdown I was struck by the beauty of the Dogwood Cronus plants in my local park. The ‘glass roots’ below the earth represent the development of ideas in my mind before they came to full flower above.
I received a Welsh Arts Council grant called ‘Tyfiant’ (Growth) in July 2020 to develop tall and large sculptural vessels, to be exhibited both indoors and outdoors, playing attention to pattern, colour variation and colour gradation. As part of this project I acquired a new deep kiln, now installed in a new workshop at the end of the garden. I have been experimenting with the variables of temperature and thickness of glass and the use of props to see how these affect the flow and tone of colour in Kiln-formed glass. I also explored the effect of layering various colours and observing their results when stretched with gravity.
